Hadley Fire Department Faces Staffing Cuts, Leaving Neighboring Communities Concerned

Hadley is confronting a budget shortfall that could force cuts to its fire department, a move raising concern not only locally but among neighboring communities. Fire Chief Michael Spanknebel confirmed that at least two positions will be cut and vacant roles for Deputy Chief and Lieutenant will remain unfilled, reducing department personnel to seven. Chief Spanknebel described the situation as “the toughest year” of his 25-year career and emphasized the dedication of his team, who remain committed despite the uncertainty. Amherst Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren noted potential consequences for regional emergency response, particularly regarding mutual aid and ambulance coverage.

Residents are also worried. Longtime Hadley resident Karen Hayes expressed concern over response times and community safety. The town’s Select Board and Finance Committee are reviewing options, with layoffs set to be finalized once the firefighters union is notified. Chief Spanknebel remains hopeful that normal staffing can be restored in the future.
