Hadley Faces Budget Shortfall

Hadley is facing a significant budget shortfall following a failed passage of two property tax override questions, which residents voted against nearly 2-to-1. The failed overrides were intended to fund key town departments, including schools and public safety, and bolster the stabilization fund.

Fire Chief Michael Spanknebel outlined the impact on his department, noting that even after planned layoffs, the department still faces a shortfall of over $107,000, potentially requiring additional staff reductions. Chief Spanknebel warned that the cuts could affect the town’s ability to maintain adequate public safety coverage.

Town leaders are preparing for a special town meeting on October 23, where residents will weigh in on how to move forward without the extra revenue. The forum held Wednesday allowed officials and residents to discuss budget impacts and explore potential solutions for balancing essential services with limited funds.
